Word up. Next week sees the most excellent of poets, John Darnielle, take to the stage at Koko with The Mountain Goats. If you haven’t come across this former psychiatric nurse and his band before then you should probably look into remedying that shameful situation pronto.
Darnielle has often been described as one of America’s greatest lyricists, which is none too surprising if you consider the fact that he initially set out recording at home with the intention of setting his poems to music. This worked out well – the poetry morphed into some pretty special songs and he has been a highly prolific musician ever since.
You can guarantee time spent with The Mountain Goats is time spent wisely – the lyrics will teach you something about everything. In his time, Darnielle has tackled life, death, literature, art, relationships, religion…the list is endless.
If we had to describe the sound of The Mountain Goats, we’d probably put them under a lo-fi indie folk rock bracket, but that’s a bit too rambly for our liking. Your best bet is to have a little listen yourselves and come to your own conclusions.
And if the sound of that sparks your interest then you might like to check out his other music project, The Extra Lens (formerly The Extra Glenns). They’ll be releasing their new album, Undercard, this October.
