tUnE-yArDs @ Scala, 8/6/2011

tUnE-yArDs is the musical project of New England native Merrill Garbus. Said to possess an “expansive sound that marries a coarse folk ingenuity with the bold pop sensibility of an R&B siren”, her second album WHOKILL was released in April to critical acclaim on label 4AD.

Recording herself using a digital voice recorder and assembled using shareware mixing software, Merrill manages to marry the enigmatic sensation of a Coco Rosie track with the industrial sound of M.I.A. – producing something truly brilliant. It’s no wonder that her album is already hitting the top of critics’ choice lists for 2011.

Merrill is in Camden next week, playing at Scala on Wednesday (8/6/2011). The show is already sold out, but we’d recommend getting yourself aquainted with this young lady pronto. Her 2009 album BiRd-BrAiNs is just as good as her 2011 offerring so well worth investigation. Check out a Bizness from WHOKILL below….

Frank Turner – England Keep My Bones

Frank Turner is back in Camden Town next Monday (6/6/2011) to celebrate the launch of his eagerly anticipated album England Keep My Bones at the Barfly.

For those of you not yet familiar with Mr Turner (where have you been?), you should be prepared – his sound is a delicious punk/pop/folk/rock fusion. Many of his songs defy musical logic, indiepop verses stumbling into choruses of punkrock; while other tracks can catch you unprepared with their quiet simplicity. For the uninitiated, we’d recommend a long hard listen to his 2008 critically applauded album Love Ire and Song.

Turner has this week allowed the world a glimpse of his new album ahead of the official release. Have a listen. We’d defy you not to find at least one track that you want to pop straight onto your repeat summer playlist. For us, it’s the understated Nights Become Days. Quietly gorgeous.

England Keep My Bones is released on Xtra Mile Recordings in the UK, and Epitaph worldwide on 6th June 2011.

Son of Muddy Waters to play Camden

We’re reading Keith Richards’ autobiography at the moment and one thing you learn about him very early on in his story is that he’s a mega Muddy Waters fan. He likes him A LOT. The blues player influenced the Rolling Stones in their early days back in the sixties, and has inspired countless other musicians over the years, even achieving the accolade of Rolling Stone magazine’s 11th greatest artist OF ALL TIME.

Unfortunately we’re never going to get the chance to see him play live, but this Sunday Camden will play host to the next best thing when his eldest son Mud Morganfield makes a very special appearance at The Blues Kitchen. Said to be just as good as his old dad, this is a man you need to see if you take your musical education at all seriously.

Mud is kicking off the start of the venue’s week-long Festival of Rhythm and Blues, which will see plenty more legends take to the stage. You can find the full details here –

Record release: Flowerpot Sessions

Not only does this coming weekend have the cheeky bonus of a bank holiday tacked on the end, it also boasts the added allure of a mighty fine release from Communion Records.

The hotly anticipated double album ‘Flowerpot Sessions’ was recorded over one week last summer as part of the Communion take-over of Kentish Town’s much missed Flowerpot venue.

It debuts some inspiring tracks that you won’t have heard before and features collaborations between many of our current favourite artists, including Kyla la Grange, Marcus Foster, Matthew and the Atlas, and The Staves.

A gem of a production, this is one record you’re going to be willing to fork out actual pennies for. If you didn’t manage to make it to the shows last summer then you can get a taster of what the whole vibe was about with this teaser from the Communion team…

‘Flowerpot Sessions’ will be released on Monday 30th May.
