Something for the weekend

Are you going out tonight? In need of some flash new dance moves to impress your friends with? In that case, look no further than Miike Snow’s video for their latest single The Rabbit.  It’s chock full of eye-popping shapes that you’re bound to have never tried before.  Be warned though – these are not to be practised  in polite company.

This Swedish electropop band released their self-titled debut album in 2009 to much critical acclaim. Their biggest track, Animal, has popped up all over the place, and their talent has reached even wider audiences as two thirds of the group make up production team Bloodshy and Avant. The duo has written grammy-winning songs for a plethora of Saturday night pop royalty, from Kylie to Madonna.

Time to get your dancing shoes on.

Hyperpotamus and the Fly

The Fly magazine is having a party at the Barfly tonight. They are celebrating the launch of a new issue. Any excuse for a party is valid in our book.

It looks set to be a fun old night. Performing will be Hyperpotamus. Rumour has it that this chap makes music with the use of only four microphones and a loop station peddle.

Hyperpotamus self-released his debut album “Largo Bailón” in March 2009. Here he is performing Sweet Dreams:

Make sure you give it time to get going.

A welcome shot of serotonin

Our favourite release of the month surely has to be the latest Mystery Jets album, Serotonin. If you’ve yet to have a listen then you seriously need to get on the case as it is packed full of musical crackers.

Excitable and humorous, their fourth album raises the bar to a whole new standard as they take us on a whistle stop tour through all the thoughts and feelings that come hand in hand with yearning and desire.

Some might criticise the fact that the 80’s influence that was so prevalent in their previous record, Twenty One, lingers on in this new material, but we reckon the upbeat sound helps set them apart from the usual indie offerings and complements the cheekily ironic tunes.  Flash a Hungry Smile is a triumph of lyrical wit, and if the line ‘All the birds and bees/Have got STDs’ doesn’t bring at least a smirk to your face then there must be something wrong with you.

Other highlights to look out for are It’s too late, Show Me the Light and Dreaming of Another World.

Rap ‘n’ roll

This week we have mostly been getting down and dirty with a headphone or two full of the Black Keys’ collaborative hip-hop side project BLAKROC.

Released last year the album was recorded in just over a week, with the ‘keys’ supplying their dusty brand of rock ‘n’ roll while a melee of hip-hop heavyweights take turns to chat away atop. Guests include Raekwon, Mos Def, Billy Danze and even the late Ol’ Dirty Bastard.

The record is just that, a record of an event. And that event sounds good, especially whilst strolling round a muggy Camden of an evening. A second BLAKROC release is due in the not too distant future so keep your ears peeled.
